Listening Your Way to New Tips

New year, new you. No kidding. Whoa the world is crazy right now, so time to stay powered up with some new practices, Creative Genius! I’ve been listening to some amazing books through Audible and I wanted to just give a shout out to them.

One book I really devoured was Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson. I have to say I got the best tips to hack my sleep from him.  There was the standard info like not having devices in the room, but one thing I loved was his discussion of the circadian rhythms and how we sleep in 90 minute cycles. He talks about how to get the full benefits from the sleep you do get, when you respect the sleep cycle and set your alarm to go off at the end of 90 minutes. For example you go to bed at 10PM (hah!), then set your alarm for 5:30 or 7:00AM. All those hours in between are increments of 90 minutes.  Get it?

A sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and during that time we move through five stages of sleep. The first four stages make up our non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and the fifth stage is when rapid eye movement (REM) sleep occurs.  You can find much more about it in Shawn’s book.

The other book is Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza. I remember Dr. Dispenza from What the Bleep Do We Know and being fascinated with his theories. Then one of my collaborators got super obsessed with him and I found this book from 2012.  I loved it. I’m actually listening to it again because there were so many tips in there to help break belief habits. There’s plenty of quantum physics and neuroscience for the skeptics, AND super simple ways to shift your thinking at the subconscious automaton level.

Why am I telling you this?  Because some of you have drawn a picture of your future and you wonder why you haven’t seen parts of it happen yet. In this book you learn some ways to break through old behaviors and build new ones. One particularly fun technique is when you get to a habit you want to break and catch yourself in the act of doing it again, you stop and yell CHANGE!” (really fun in the grocery store when you are about to buy cookies. ;-)
