Your Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool! Right?

Here’s a piece of advice my mother gave me when I was giving her a hard time for hoarding so many things in the cupboard, “You never forget your first recession, it can happen again” she warned me. She’d been through the Great Depression and remembered what it was like to not have enough of anything. Back then they didn’t have Instacart deliveries or Amazon workers risking their lives to bring you your every need.

I admit, I am constantly reminded of her “savings plan”. I think, “How can I reuse the dill pickle jar to put my coconut milk concoctions into? How can I wash and reuse my bags so I don’t go back to old patterns of waste?” I still save the jar and wash the bags.

This disrupting time will help us step up our game and become better people – at connecting with our neighbors and helping each other in small ways that make a big difference. This morning I was in the grocery store and a man I didn’t know, in his own version of a handmade mask passed me with his cart at a six foot distance, then lifted up his new container of disinfecting wipes and whispered – “Aisle 2, there’s about 2 containers left.” Score! Thanks dude!

Disruption gives you the opportunity to revisit your life and your business, to find the new normal for you, to think about others and to keep on giving. Keep your focus where it counts, on moving you, your family and friends, and your business forward successfully.

Here are 3 tips to do just that:

1. Think about what matters to you.

There will not be a wrong or right way to get through this experience and downturn. What is true is there will be your way, and while you can learn from the people around you, in the end be sure to make your own choices about how to proceed, and once you choose, take action!

2. Assess opportunities.

Evaluate if a simple call with a client gives you the chance to offer to help them or expand your work with them to make their work easier. If you are ready to pivot to a new offering, now is the time to do it. Evaluate your relationships and see if all of your customers are right for you. If not, why not? If so, then what other services or products do you have that will help them right now to meet their needs? As for your new or potential customers, spend time building out your specific offering during this COVID-19 time. Learn your signature story and start to tell it. Build the bridge to people with uplifting stories that reflect why your offering is unique and where it came from.

3. Don’t give up.

Don’t give up on your business, or your friends and family and especially on you and what you bring to the world. Create an online interaction and experience with customers that they will never forget. Continue to over deliver and believe in yourself – there is only one “you” and that “you” matters.
